I'm a LCSW therapist and been practicing for almost 15 years. During this time I have had the privilege of spending 1,000s of hours helping 100s of people work towards “a life worth living”. I recently left my full time job to be more of a stay at home mom. For the last 4 years I've taught DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) skills to people in treatment for behavioral health disorders. One of the requirements of teaching DBT skills is that you have to practice them yourself. After teaching for a few years I remember my husband asking, “You know all these skills. Why aren’t you practicing them yourself?” (I think every husband says that to their therapist wife. ) So, whenever I taught a DBT skill I'd start using that skill during the week.
